State Butterflies of India
Let us look at nature. How beautiful these butterfly creatures are. We actually design our costumes only after civilization, but these fellows are already wearing colorful outfits for more than a million yearsπππ. That's the gift of mother nature and so we are grateful to conserve each and every species of butterflies and their habitat. Here we shall discuss the state butterflies of our nation.
1. Blue mormon butterfly
Blue mormon
butterfly has been declared as a state butterfly of Maharashtra in
2015. It is the first state to fix its state butterfly. This large swallowtail is found in India and Sri lanka. This is mainly restricted to the
Western Ghats of Maharashtra, South India and coastal belts. It may
occasionally be spotted in the Maharashtrian mainland between Vidarbha and
Western Maharashtra.
2. Malabar banded peacock
Malabar banded peacock or Buddha Mayuri butterfly is Kerala’s official butterfly. Malabar Banded Peacock is one of the most dazzling
butterflies' in the world and also rated as the third most beautiful butterfly
in India. Its flight is extremely swift; possibly swifter than that of any
other Peacock butterflies. It is a true favourite of the butterfly collectors.
This Swallowtail butterfly is endemic to the Western Ghats and is found
essentially between southern Goa and northern Kerala. The scientific name of
this butterfly is Papilio buddha.
3. Southern birdwing Butterfly
Karnataka government declared Southern Birdwing as a state buttefly in
2017. Troides minos is the scientific name of this
butterfly. The
butterfly has red and yellow on its wings that are also the colors of the
Kannada flag. Though it is not an endangered species, the International
Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has recommended that the numbers of
these butterflies be monitored. This butterfly is seen up to a height of
3,000 ft in the Western Ghats limits. It can also be found in evergreen
forests, deciduous forests, dry bush forest and agricultural land.
Uttarkhand is the second state to declare its state butterfly. Common Peacock (Papilio bianor) is among the prettiest butterflies found in the foothills up to 2,100 meter in Himalayas. Its size is about 90-130 mm. Common Peacock is a powerful flier, but often hovers near flowers to feed on its nectar. It is also found on forest tracks at moist patches, where it can sit and feed for long duration. It can be confused with Paris Peacock (Papilio paris), which is a very similar butterfly.
Tamil Nadu is the fifth state to
declare its state butterfly in 2019. Tamil Yeoman (Cirrochroa
thais), a butterfly species endemic to Western Ghats, has
been declared as the state butterfly of Tamil Nadu. The
tawny-coloured creature with a dark brown outer ring is among the 32 butterfly
species found in Western Ghats. Also known as Tamil Maravan, which means
warrior, these butterflies could be found mainly in hilly areas.
In 2021, Arunachal pradesh declared Kaiser-i-Hind butterfly as its state
butterfly. Kaiser-i-Hind ( Teinopalpus
imperialis ) literally means Emperor of India. This butterfly with a
90-120 mm wingspan is found in six States along the Eastern Himalayas at
elevations from 6,000-10,000 feet in well-wooded terrain.
7. Malabar tree nymph butterfly
The Malabar tree nymph, known for its attractive black and white wing pattern and unique flight movement, was declared Goa’s state butterfly in 2021. The species is endemic to the Western Ghats and though it is found in southern Maharashtra, its real distribution starts from Goa.
